Character Profile: Cat Jones

Cat Jones is a writer, performer, photographer, media artist, director, producer and all round creatrix.

With a performance practice spanning over 25 years, Cat specialises in text, vocals and live interactives. She is especially interested in audience psychology for immersive, interactive and participatory works.

Cat has collaborated with Mel Ramos and Rhys Turner on Heard for Experimenta, Julie Vulcan on disclosed, the League of Imaginary Scientists on The Conversation Contraption, Jason Sweeney for Faceless Music. She has several ongoing collaborative relationships with artists such as Lucy HG (LA), Melissa Hunt, djbc, and Lucinda Clutterbuck. She has performed with Chicks On Speed, PVI Collective in TTS: Route 76 and Panopticon, the Party Line in Steel Fracture, and for That Elusive Thrill series in Absurd Shorts, Trading Desire and Erotica. Her film and TV credits include Golden Gang by Chicks on Speed, Constellations, Wednesday 2:45, The Mormon Conquest, The Last Paperboy, Fat Cow Motel and Tunnel Vision.

She is the creator of catgURL, a live interactive performance event that deconstructs definitive sexuality through subcultural identities in a virtual world. catgURL was developed in collaboration with Barbara Clare Totterdell, Gail Kelly, Sam James and Lucinda Clutterbuck with the assistance of One Extra Dance, Performance Space, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Playworks, Rex Cramphorn Studio and Australia Council. catgURL is discussed in the context of non-linear narratives in the VJ Theory Book also cited at Remix Theory.

She has a BA-Drama (QUT Academy of the Arts) and has undertaken extensive professional development in performance art and interactive performance including residencies and workshops with The Kitchen (NY) at Text as a basis for Multi-Media Performance with Bill T Jones and Laurie Anderson, Troika Ranch Dance Theatre (NY) at Live Interactive, Time_Place_Space_1 (Wagga Wagga) and with DV8’s Wendy Houston to name a few.

Cat was Artistic Director/CEO of PACT centre for emerging artists, where she co-directed two new works with Julie Vulcan, devised by PACT Ensemble 2010 and 2011, UNSETTLINGS and BEGUILED. She was co-director of Electrofringe in 2006 and 2007, a festival of experimental electronic arts and culture, where she introduced a special strand of programming focused on interactive performance. Cat was the inaugural Chairperson of Electrofringe Ltd from 2008 -2010.

In 2012 Cat was awarded a Creative Australia Fellowship from The Australia Council to research and develop a body of work on plant-human relationships and plant signalling.

In 2014 she was awarded a Synapse residency to research body illusions with leading Australian neuroscientists. In 2015 was artist in residence at the Institute of Art and Olfaction, Los Angeles to investigate the creation and delivery of bespoke scents for use in interdisciplinary art.

In 2016 Cat is the winner of the Golden Pear, Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent.

She is currently writer for Force Majeure, dance theatre, for a new work with director and choreographer Danielle Mcich.
